This month sees the world honour parents on the Global Day of Parents. Whatever you call them – folks, rents or mum and dad, it’s a celebration of the people who brought us into the world.
But it got us thinking about parents and the responsibility put upon their shoulders when going through a relationship breakdown and, more importantly, how to make sure it’s right for your dependents.
So, what can you do to help ease the process for your children? Here are our top three things to consider.
The first thing is obvious for us to say, but make sure you get experienced legal representation. A good family law solicitor can be the difference between being amicable and straightforward for everyone. Solicitors will always act in the best interests of the children and their main aim is to come to an agreement outside of court.
The second is to make sure that the financial and child arrangements are a priority, so you know your children are adequately provided for in the long term. This process will protect you, your partner and your children and will make sure that arrangements for where your child will live, how much time they will spend with each parent and how they will be financially supported. It’s essential to making sure that things are clear for everyone.
The third is mediation. If you and your partner are struggling to agree and make decisions, then your solicitor can suggest a mediator and even a counsellor should it be needed. The role of a mediator in a relationship breakdown can be crucial in avoiding lengthy and costly court battles.
